Money Saving Websites
October 21, 2009 at 8:23 am
You’d want to be living under a stone not to have noticed the trend for money saving websites. Here are some of my favourites:

They’re only going 10 months and are this week celebrating their 1,000th post. That’s a brilliant achievement. This is a great little site that shares recipes and reviews, and I particularly like the ‘what’s in this week at Aldi and Lidl’ reports. They always have a competition going on and as a result there’s a vibrant community of followers.

Practical ways to save money in the areas of Personal Finance, Family Spending, Lifestyle, Health & Beauty and Technology. Well known Irish journalists do much of the writing, so the feel is rather like one of the weekend magazine supplements – but all about saving cash.

An initiative from Dublin City Council, Dublin Waste is a space where people can advertise items they no longer want and you can get them for free! I remember spotting, a couple of years ago when it first launched, a BMW for swap for something interesting… there are no Beamers on there now but there are plenty of TV’s, items of furniture, baby goods, sporting goods and other random items. To avail of something good on this site, you’ve got to be quick. Arrange transport and soon that item will be yours – for free.
Jumbletown is similar. My only complaint with it (apart from the hideous navigation up top) is the difficulty in removing your item once it’s gone.

Chic Geek Gadgets
March 30, 2009 at 5:53 pm
I was invited to bring along my favourite gadgets to the PC Live! radio show for the ‘show and tell’ show. A bit unnerving at first because I’m not really that into mobile phones, games, laptop dongles or other gadgets. But I surprised myself by bringing not one but two gadgets! You can listen in here.
What did I bring?
Why my electric eyelash curler and a Kodak Zi6 video camera of course!
While we’re on the subject of chic geeks, the next girl geek dinner in Dublin is taking place at the end of April. Details are going on the Girl Geek Dinner website tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled, register fast, and come along for a wonderful evening of chat, fun, and geekery.

Had great fun last week chatting to Robert Coyle of Bloom Advertising on Alex Gibson’s show – The Persuaders. We were talking about blogging in the run up to the blog awards. Here are some of the things I talked about. If any of these grab you, have a listen to the show:
- Being a blogger is not just about writing your own blog
- How I prepare my content; my blog process
- Blogrolls and what I think of them
- How I promote my blog
- Commenting etiquette
- Talking about some of the finalists in the blog awards including Red Mum, Iced Coffee, Sabrina Dent, The Sexy Pedestrian (my ‘one to watch’ who won!), Sourgrapes, and Cheap Eats (who also won the category)

Permission to Podcast Sir

Do you think it’s right to let people know when they’re being recorded? Or would you be of the opinion that stealth brings out the truth?
Last night we were at the IIA Awards and our table had a disproportionate number of podcasters – a pod of podcasters? It seemed like there were mics all over the place – lurking in the bread rolls, under the salt shaker…there were lots of leading open ended questions being asked, and with the wine a flowing, I just couldn’t help myself – setting forth my opinions, putting the world to rights. It was only when the innocent seeming interrogator kept glancing down at the bread rolls that I saw the mic – switched on, little green light blinking as it lapped up my words. Shocked. Aghast. Thinking what the hell did I just say?
Don’t you think that there should be some sort of podcasting etiquette? I just think it would be polite to let someone know that every word they say is being recorded and will be available for download from a site near you. I know natural is good, free flowing is fun, but at least give people a chance.
At least they can’t podcast bad dancing!!
