Painless hosting transfer

Over the weekend this site changed hosts. From one Irish hosting company to another. I’ll miss the one I’ve been with because they’ve never let me down and they are such chirpy souls at the end of the phone - no matter how dumb the question I ask.
So why the move? You might ask.
I needed to upgrade wordpress, the old one was presenting dodgy RSS feeds, and adding unwanted notations to my posts, so the time had come. I needed a linux server, and preferably one that supports htaccess files. Seeing as Blacknight are the bloggers choice, I decided to move on over.
The whole thing happened quite smoothly. Doing it on a bank holiday weekend was a good idea. And having someone to help me made it much easier. Thanks to Gordon, who actually did the moving and installing. I looked after the nail biting and hoping nothing went wrong.
The only glitch was the fact that mac mail no longer lets me receive emails! It’s one of those bugs that could take a million days to work out. I am impressed with the level of interest paid to it by Blacknight support team. They’ve had 3 people on the case. In the end I’ve just decided to change email clients to Thunderbird. So far so good, my only complaint is the creepy icon of a dead bird draped over an envelope.
Hosting Scam

If you receive a telephone call from a UK hosting company claiming that your company name is under attack in the UK (or other regions), ignore it.
A client rang me on Friday because they had received a call from a company called Net Easi telling them just that. They girl on the phone acted as if she was trying to help my client by telling them that someone else was trying to buy their company name as a .co.uk and a .net domain, as well as some other combinations. She said that she could secure the domains for my client if they bought them by 5 o’clock on Friday. The cost? £800
The people at Net Easi are preying on people’s lack of knowledge about domain name registration. Instilling a false sense of fear and attempting to profit from it. They are mere scumbags.
Luckily my client telephoned me and I put them right. If you get a similar call, can I suggest you seize the opportunity to vent?
