Phone Book + Yellow Pages Opt Out
August 13, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Isn’t it about time we got the choice to opt out of receiving these hulks of paper to our doors?
Yesterday I received the eircom phone book and the yellow pages. The cost to the environment of delivering these to me is quite high, especially considering that:
- I will never use them, preferring to search the internet instead
- I am not listed in the phone book
- I am not an eircom customer
Actually I wonder if the phone book only lists eircom customers? I duly deposited them to the dusty shelf under the stairs and threw the old ones in the (green) bin.
Do you think it would be a good idea to give green consumers the chance to opt out of receiving the phone books?
Update on 15 August – it’s easy to remove your name from the distribution lists. Just dial 01 46 000 46.

You could get the Green Pages instead of the Yellow pages
Yes, but how do I ‘unget’ the white and yellow ones?
Drop ‘em all back to Eircom’s doorstep.
To start off on a light hearted note, when I ran into some trouble with broken furniture some old phone books came to the rescue and have held up very well since then in their new purpose. Technically that was recycling.
It certainly should be an option to opt-out of receiving the phone books. Alternatively, given the general functionality of phone books, would you be open to an initiative that the phone books are all printed on recycled paper?
In any business I’ve worked in an up to date phone book / Yellow Pages is a valuable resource for locating local businesses.

We received them too and yes I think its a great point MaryRose – we just dont use them – we also refused an eircom line when we moved in..
Gosh, judging from the speed of agreements there, I think this has got legs. Now, does anyone have any idea what body to start nagging about this? I’ll do the nagging, just don’t know where to point at.
We received them too and they went straight to the bin… Everyone in our building seemed to do the same. I’d imagine most people use online directories these days…
Maybe the best thing to do is to contact eircom first?
[...] idea from Maryrose Lyons here; Hey eircom, lets not give everyone phone books – maybe just the people who want [...]
